City of Dubuque Accessibility Plan

Proudly Accessible Dubuque works closely with the City of Dubuque, particularly with the Building Services Department and the Human Rights Department and Commission. This initiative plays a key role in forwarding the City Council’s priority of improved accessibility in the community.  The role of Proudly Accessible Dubuque is to raise awareness in the community regarding accessibility and to encourage good faith efforts to remove barriers in existing buildings.

Besides lending support to this effort, the City of Dubuque has an additional obligation to insure compliance with specific legal requirements for accessibility.  As part of that obligation, the City has hired an inspector in the Building Services Department to work with businesses to identify accessibility barriers in existing buildings where removal is “readily achievable.”  Further information on that initiative can be obtained by contacting the Building Services Department at 563-589-4150.  The City of Dubuque has hired an additional person in the parking division who will assist with accessible parking enforcement.

The City of Dubuque encourages businesses to contact the Building Services Department for further information prior to making accessibility improvements.  In addition, the City of Dubuque Human Rights Department is responsible for investigating complaints from residents and visitors regarding accessibility requirements.  The Human Rights Department can be reached at 563-589-4190.

Finally, the Human Rights Commission has an accessibility subcommittee that provides technical assistance to Proudly Accessible Dubuque regarding accessibility.
